About Battery Storage for Business

Independent guidance on behind-the-meter commercial battery storage, published by SEO Dons Ltd. We are not an installer.

Battery Storage for Business is an independent information site about behind-the-meter battery energy storage (BESS) for UK businesses — manufacturers, cold stores, logistics depots, large offices, multi-site retail, EV fleet operators and farms. It is published by SEO Dons Ltd (Company No. 16766013, 71–75 Shelton Street, London WC2H 9JQ).

We are not an installer and we do not sell batteries. We model the numbers from your half-hourly meter data, tell you honestly whether storage stacks up on your site, and — if it does — introduce you to MCS-certified installers. We are paid by those installers when an introduction turns into work, which is why we are explicit about the cases where a battery does not pay: we would rather tell you now than waste your time and ours.

Why a storage specialist, not a general installer

Most installers treat a commercial battery like a big domestic one. That's where the money is lost. A commercial site is billed on the shape of its half-hourly demand — red-band DUoS, available-capacity (kVA) charges, peak unit rates — and a battery only pays if it's sized and controlled around that shape. We start every project by pulling a year of your half-hourly meter data and modelling the value streams that actually apply to your site: peak-shaving, arbitrage, solar self-consumption, backup, and grid-flexibility revenue. The proposal that follows is built on your numbers, not a showroom estimate, and it's fixed-price — what you sign is what you pay.

How we work

We are independent of every battery manufacturer and tied to no installer's order book, so the modelling reflects your duty cycle rather than someone's stock position. What we look for in a good specification: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells for thermal stability and cycle life; a design that follows the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems, with fire, ventilation and separation engineered in and your insurer engaged before energisation rather than after; a G99 application lodged with the DNO early, so the connection runs in parallel with the build instead of holding it up; and, where grid-flexibility revenue is worth chasing, a credible route to market through an aggregator. We give you the full financial model — simple payback, IRR and NPV — so you, your accountant, or any installer you invite to quote can check the arithmetic against your own meter data.

Honest about the limits

Storage doesn't suit every site. If your load is flat, your tariff is fixed at a low rate, and you have no red-band exposure or solar to soak up, a battery may not pay back inside a sensible horizon — and we will tell you so. We are paid only when an introduction turns into work, so a recommendation to do nothing costs us the fee; we would still rather give it than send an installer to a site where the numbers do not stack up. If the model says no, that is the answer, and you have lost nothing but the meter data you sent us.

How to check the installer you end up with

We hold no installation accreditations, because we do not install anything. The certifications below are the ones the installer quoting for your system should hold, and every one can be checked directly with the issuing body before you sign. Ask for the registration number and verify it yourself — a legitimate contractor will expect the question.

The design itself should follow the IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems, with cells to BS EN/IEC 62619 and the system to BS EN/IEC 62933, installation under CDM 2015, a G99 connection agreement with your DNO, and your insurer engaged before energisation. If a quote does not mention G99, treat that as a red flag rather than an oversight.

FREE FEASIBILITY

Put us to the test on your own site

Free desk feasibility from your half-hourly data. We will tell you honestly if storage does not stack up.

What you get, within 3 working days: a 2-page battery feasibility summary naming your indicative system size (kW and kWh), the installed cost band, which value streams actually apply to your site (peak-shaving, red-band DUoS avoidance, load shifting, solar self-consumption, grid services), and an honest payback range. If storage does not stack up for your site, the summary says so.

What we will not do
  • We do not run a lead auction. Your details are never sold or passed to a panel of installers.
  • No marketing list, no newsletter sign-up, no unsolicited calls.
  • We will not oversize a system to inflate a quote, or model a payback we cannot defend.
