The grid picture

Newcastle sits in the licence area of Northern Powergrid (Northeast), the distribution network operator (DNO) for Tyne and Wear and the wider North East. Any commercial battery you install must be notified to or approved by Northern Powergrid before it energises. For all but the smallest systems that means a G99 application (G98 covers only the smallest units); the DNO reviews the connection and may impose an export limitation or, on a constrained part of the network, an Active Network Management (ANM) connection. G99 timescales run from roughly 8 weeks to 12 months depending on the system size and local network headroom, so the application goes in early — we submit it at the start of the project, not the end.
